DOCUMENTARY WORK AND PROJECTS
BIRDS NEST
Documentary project on how the diverse bird population at Utah Lake is using fishing line and other anthropogenic materials left behind from fisherman to build their nests.
Many fishermen use monofilament fishing line, which is known for being both strong, light weight, and clear. These are all good things for a fisherman. However, this trash poses a danger to the birds that breed in this area. The general term for tangled fishing line is a bird's nest, due to the very similar resemblance. These birds are trying to build nests in time for spring, and are hunting down materials that are going to create a strong, sustainable home for their chicks. The fishing line, tangled into a 'birds nest' resembles just that. They don't understand the potential danger, only that they can finish their nest earlier and stronger with less work, leaving more time for mating. That fishing line may create a sturdy nest, but unlike grass or twigs, if a bird's leg was to get caught in the line, they are unlikely to be able to get themselves loose. This will cause loss of circulation, an inability to hunt for food, vulnerability to prey, and the possibility of infection. This space is a place we share with the local wildlife and are ultimately benefiting from. It is wrong to turn their habitat into our garbage disposal. These birds deserve better than a home made from trash.
